Understanding High Security Padlocks
There are many types of high security lock so we have broken down this section into easily understood categories below. Please scroll right down to the bottom first to ensure you find the right lock for your purpose. Please note that wherever there are raindrop icons, this indicates a fully weatherproof locks for all conditions.
Insurance Approved High Security Padlocks
Special grades of security padlock are often required by insurance companies under different criteria. Often an industry standard known as CEN will be required that ranges from grades 1-6. Most will require a grade 3 or more and often a closed shackle design.
However, it is important to note that many insurance companies have very outdated and incorrect requirements. Please refer to our
Insurance Advice Section for more information and ensure you are buying the correct lock.
Extreme Padlocks
The latest range by ABUS is the Extreme, with all the features of the highest security models and yet highly weatherproof. A hardened shackle, ball bearing locking mechanism and a special weatherproof coating make this lock ideal in all extreme conditions.

Closed Shackle Extreme Padlock
This is the closed shackle version of the new Extreme range by ABUS. The closed shackles giving added protection against forced attacks and bolt cutters, often a requirement of insurance companies. Special weatherproof treatment makes this a marine grade lock suitable for all weather conditions and extreme environments.

Hardened Steel Padlock

Closed Shackle High Security Stronghold Padlock
The closed shackle high security Stronghold padlock has the highest security rating on the market. As a CEN grade 6 padlock you cannot buy a lock that is more resistant to bolt cropping and cutting. A hardened boron alloy shackle and an electophoretic coat also give this lock outstanding resistance to the weather.

Lever Padlock
Most padlocks are now made using pins or discs within their locking mechanism. However, some insurance companies still require padlocks with 5 or more levers. This model satisfies those with 6 integrated levers and a closed shackle design.

High Security Combination Padlocks
Although there are no combination padlocks that hold insurance certifications, there are a few models that are made to be especially strong where a keyed lock is simply not suitable.

Combination Shutter Padlock (Straight Shackle)

This padlock is built to the same specification as our high security Diskus Padlocks but including the addition of the ABUS Plus mechanism with 250,000 key variations with keys that cannot be copied. It carries a CEN Grade 3 certification.

Restricted / Protected Padlocks
A padlock that uses a key that is very difficult to copy or is unique to your lock is known as a restricted or protected keyway. There are varying degrees to which the protection is afforded which depends on how difficult the key is to get copied and how many key variations there are in circulation. The locks below are fully restricted. The keys cannot be copied and records are kept of the owners.
Extreme Padlocks (Restricted)
The ABUS Extreme series is a very popular lock since it is both highly secure and weatherproof. It is therefore a good choice as a restricted lock. The patented curved Y-keyway is about as secured as you can get on the market and each lock is specifically managed by the UK ABUS headquarters.

This is the closed shackle version of the new Extreme range by ABUS. It also uses the patented curved Y-keyway that the open shackle restricted locks have. You may opt for the closed shackle version to help prevent against bolt cutting attacks or if you insurance company specifically requires a closed shackle design.
